R-22 refrigerant is the old standard for residential air conditioners, now being phased out by the Environmental Protection Agency because it is bad for the environment.
In less than 6 months, R-22, commonly known as freon, will no longer be produced or imported. Next year, only recovered, recycled, or reclaimed supplies of R-22 will be available. Phasing out R-22 was first set in motion in the 1980s with the Montreal Protocol. The production (not use) of R-22 is being phased out. You are not required to stop using R-22 air conditioners nor to replace existing equipment, but you will need to prepare for the high cost of sustaining your old system. R-22 supplies will be more limited and costs to service equipment with R-22 will rise.
