Types of Geothermal Heat Pumps
Closed Loop System
Horizontal
Most cost efficient for new residential construction with a sufficient lot size. Requires trenches at least 4 foot deep.
Vertical
Large commercial buildings and schools often use vertical systems because vertical systems require less land area. Vertical loops are also used where soil conditions prohibit. Vertical loops also reduce disturbance to existing landscaping .
Pond/Lake
This method is the lowest cost option provided the site has an adequate body of water. A supply line pipe is run underground from the residence to the water and coiled into circles at least 8 feet under the surface to prevent freezing.
Open-Loop System
This system uses well or surface body water as the heat exchange fluid. The water circulates directly through the geothermal heat pump (GHP) system, then returns to the ground through the well, a recharge well, or surface discharge.
